٢٤٩ - باب ما يقوله عند النوم

And from Ḥudhayfah and Abū Dharr (may Allah be pleased with them): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when he took to his bed, would say: … Narrated by al-Bukhārī. [review: supplication text absent in source]

And from ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him and to Fāṭimah (may Allah be pleased with them both): “When you two take to your bed — or when you two lie down on your resting places —” … and in a narration: the glorification (tasbīḥ) is thirty-four times; and in [another] narration: the magnification (takbīr) is thirty-four times. And from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When one of you takes to his bed, let him dust off his bed with the inner edge of his lower garment, for he does not know what may have come upon it after him. Then let him say: ‘In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side, and by You I raise it up. If You take my soul, then have mercy on it; and if You release it, then protect it with that by which You protect Your righteous servants.’” Agreed upon.

And from ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when he took to his resting place, would breathe softly into his hands, recite the Muʿawwidhāt [the protective sūrahs], and wipe his body with them. Agreed upon. And in a narration of theirs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim]: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he took to his bed each night, would cup his two palms together, then breathe softly into them and recite into them: … then wipe with them as much of his body as he could, beginning with them over his head and his face and what faced him of his body, doing that three times. And from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When you come to your bed, perform ablution as you would for prayer, then lie down on your right side, and say: ‘… whom You sent.’ Then, if you die, you die upon the natural disposition (fiṭrah); and make them the last thing you say.” Agreed upon. And from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he took to his bed, would say: … Narrated by Muslim. [review: supplication text absent in source]

And from Ḥudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when he wished to sleep, would place his right hand under his cheek, then say: … Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good (ḥasan) ḥadīth.” And Abū Dāwūd narrated it by way of the report of Ḥafṣah (may Allah be pleased with her), and in it [is the addition] that he used to say it three times.
