Congregational prayer is a stressed sunna.

Chapter on congregational prayer
Lightening it with the imām is an established sunna; the least in other than Jumuʿa is one with the imām, even if a woman or child.
The most deserving to lead is the most learned.
ثمّ الأقرأ.
Then the best reciter.
ثمّ الأَورع.
Then the most Godfearing.
ثمّ الأكبر سناً.
Then the eldest in age.
ثمّ الأَحسن خلقاً.
Then the best in character.
ثمّ الأَشرف نسباً.
Then the noblest in lineage.
ثمّ الأَصبح وجهاً.
Then the fairest in face.
ومَن أَمَّ واحداً أَقامَه عن يمينه مقارناً له، وإنّ أَمّ اثنين تَقَدَّمَ عليهما.
Whoever leads one person stands him to his right level with him; if he leads two, he stands ahead of them.
ومَن تقدَّمَ على إمامِهِ عند اقتدائه، لم يصحّ اقتداؤه، وإن تقدَّم عليه بعد اقتدائه، فسدت صلاته.
Whoever steps ahead of his imām when following—his following is invalid; if he steps ahead after following, his prayer is spoiled.
ولا يصحّ اقتداء الرَّجل بالمرأةِ… ولا بالصبيّ مطلقاً، ويصحّ اقتداء الصبيِّ بالصبيّ.
A man following a woman … or a boy absolutely is invalid; a boy may follow a boy.
ويصفّ الرجال، ثمّ الصبيان، ثمّ الخناثا، ثمّ النساء.
Men line up, then boys, then effeminate males, then women.
ويكره للنِّساء الشَّوابّ حضور الجماعة مطلقاً، ويباح للعجائز الخروج في العيدين والجمعة والفجر والمغرب والعشاء.
Young women attending congregation absolutely is disliked; elderly women may go out on the two Eids, Jumuʿa, Fajr, Maghrib, and ʿIshāʾ.
ولو ظهرَ حدث الإمام أعادَ المأموم.
If the imām’s ḥadath appears, the follower repeats.
ومتى كان بين الإمام والمأموم حائلٌ يشتبه معه حال الإمام عليه، منع الصحّة.
Whenever between imām and follower is a barrier that makes the imām’s state ambiguous to him, validity is blocked.
