ومَنAnd whoever لمnot يجدْhe finds الماءَwater خارجَoutside المصرthe town وبينهand between him وبينand between المصرthe town ميلٌ.a mile.
Whoever does not find water outside the town when there is a mile between him and the town…

Chapter on tayammum
أوOr وجدَه:he found it: وهوand he يخافfears العطش.thirst.
…or he finds it while he fears thirst.
…أو…or كانwas مريضاًill يخافfears شدّةseverity مرضهof his illness بحركتهby his movement أوor باستعماله.by using it.
…or he is ill and fears worsening of his illness by movement or by using it.
…أو…or كانwas جنباًjunub فيin المصرthe town يخافfears شدّةseverity البرد.of cold.
…or he is junub in the town and fears severe cold.
…أو…or كانwas خائفاًfearing علىfor نفسهhis soul أوor مالهhis wealth منfrom عدوenemy أوor سَبع.predator.
…or he fears for his life or property from an enemy or a predator.
أوOr وجدَهhe found it يباعsold بغبنٍat loss فاحش…outrageous… …أو…or بثمنat price المثلof the like وهوand he لاnot يملكهhe owns it تيمَّم.he performs tayammum.
…or he finds it sold at an outrageous loss … or at the going price while he cannot afford it—he performs tayammum.
ويتيممAnd he performs tayammum معwith وجودpresence الماء؛of water; لخوفِfor fear of فوتِmissing صلاةprayer العيدof Eid أوor الجنازة،funeral, والوليّand the guardian غيره،other than him, لاnot لخوفfor fear فوتmissing الجمعةFriday والوقت.and the time.
He performs tayammum while water exists for fear of missing Eid or funeral prayer, and the guardian [acts] for another; not for fear of missing Friday or the time [alone].
فإنSo if كانwas معwith رفيقِهِhis companion ماءٌ،water, طلبَهhe seeks it قبلbefore التيمّمtayammum استحباباً.as recommendation.
If water is with his companion, seeking it before tayammum is recommended.
ولاAnd not يجبobligatory طلبseeking الماءwater إلاexcept إذاif غلبpreponderated علىon ظنّهhis supposition أنَّهthat it بقربه.near him.
Seeking water is not obligatory unless he strongly supposes it is near him.
والتيممAnd tayammum ضربتانtwo strikes :: ضربة:a strike: للوجه.for the face.
Tayammum is two strikes: one strike for the face.
وضربة:And a strike: لليدينfor the two hands معwith مرفقيه.his two elbows.
And a strike for the two hands including the elbows.
ويخللAnd he combs through أصابعهhis fingers وينزعand removes خاتمه.his ring.
He combs his fingers and removes his ring.
والنيةAnd intention فيهin it فرض.obligatory.
Intention therein is obligatory.
ويجوزAnd permitted بالصعيدwith الطاهر:clean earth: وهوand it [is] كلevery ماwhat كانwas منfrom جنسgenus الأرض:of earth: كالتراب،such as soil, والرمل،and sand, والحجر،and stone, والنّورة،and lime, والكحل،and kohl, والجصّ،and gypsum, والزِّرنيخ.and arsenic.
It is valid with clean earth (ṣaʿīd): everything of the genus of earth—such as soil, sand, stone, lime, kohl, gypsum, and arsenic.
والتيمّمAnd tayammum للحدثfor ḥadath والجنابةand janāba سواء.alike.
Tayammum for ḥadath and janāba is the same.
وينقضه:And nullifies it: ماwhat ينقضnullifies الوضوء.wuḍūʾ.
It is nullified by what nullifies wuḍūʾ.
ورؤيةAnd seeing الماءwater أيضاً،also, إذاif قَدِرَhe was able علىon استعماله.using it.
Also by seeing water when he is able to use it.
ومَنAnd whoever يرجوhopes الماءwater فيin آخرend الوقت،of the time, فالأفضلthen better لهfor him تأخيرdelaying الصّلاة.prayer.
Whoever hopes for water at the end of the time, delaying prayer is better for him.
ويصلِّيAnd he prays بتيمّمهwith his tayammum ماwhat شاءhe wishes فرضاًobligatory ونفلاً.and supererogatory.
He prays with his tayammum as much as he wishes, obligatory or supererogatory.
ولوAnd if نسيhe forgot الماءَwater فيin رحلِهِhis baggage أوor كانwas بقربِهِnear him ماءٌwater لاnot يعلمhe knows بهwith it فتيمَّمَthen he performed tayammum وصَلَّى،and prayed, أَجْزأَه.it sufficed him.
If he forgot water in his baggage or water was near him without his knowing, then he performed tayammum and prayed, it suffices him.
وماAnd what أعدprepared فيin الطرقroads للشّرب،for drinking, لاnot يمنعit prevents التيمّم،tayammum, إلاexcept أنthat يعلمَhe knows بكثرتِهِfrom its abundance أنَّهthat it وضِعwas placed للوضوءfor wuḍūʾ والشّرب.and drinking.
What is set out on roads for drinking does not prevent tayammum unless he knows from its abundance that it was placed for wuḍūʾ and drinking.
